Antoni Gaud\u00ed took charge of the project in 1883 and worked on it until his death in 1926, at which point barely a quarter of the building had been completed. Construction has continued ever since, funded almost entirely by ticket sales and private donations rather than public funds\u2014which is partly why it has taken so long. Current estimates suggest completion around 2030 or later, although the towers have grown significantly over the past decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why It's Worth Watching<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Photos don\u2019t prepare you for the interior. Gaud\u00ed designed the columns to branch out like trees, supporting a stone ceiling pierced by skylights, and the stained-glass windows achieve something that photos rarely capture: as the sun moves, the entire nave changes color, with warm oranges in the afternoon giving way to cool blues. More than just a church you visit, it\u2019s a space where you can sit for ten minutes and do nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Sagrada Fam\u00edlia is Barcelona\u2019s most visited landmark, and tickets without a prior reservation are rarely available\u2014especially from April through September. Same-day tickets, when available, usually sell out within the first hour of going on sale. Booking a few days or even weeks in advance is the minimum you can realistically expect during peak season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
