The Sagrada Fam\u00edlia is understood as a cathedral, Park G\u00fcell as a park\u2014but Casa Batll\u00f3 is a private residence transformed into something that looks like it came straight out of a fairy tale, and without context, it\u2019s easy to just think, \u00abWhat a strange facade.\u00bb Here\u2019s the story behind it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why Is It Called the \u00abHouse of Bones\u00bb?\u00bb<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gaud\u00ed did not build the building from scratch: in 1904, he completely renovated an existing house for the Batll\u00f3 family, one of the wealthiest textile families in Barcelona at the time. The result features organically shaped, almost skeletal columns on the ground floor that resemble bones\u2014hence the popular nickname, \u00abCasa dels Ossos\u00bb in Catalan. The upper facade, covered with fragments of ceramic and glass in shades of blue, green, and gold, is often interpreted as a representation of the legend of Sant Jordi (Saint George) and the dragon: the undulating roof is said to represent the dragon\u2019s back, and the tower with the four-armed cross, the saint\u2019s lance piercing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What You'll Find Inside<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike the Sagrada Fam\u00edlia, there isn\u2019t a single room here that dominates the visit\u2014the appeal lies in exploring the entire house: the Piso Noble (where the Batll\u00f3 family lived, with original or faithfully restored furniture and details), the interior light court with its gradient of blue tiles\u2014darker at the top, lighter at the bottom, to distribute light evenly throughout all the floors\u2014and the attic, with parabolic arches that are now interpreted as the dragon\u2019s ribcage. The rooftop, with its ornate chimneys and distinctive cross, is the logical conclusion to the tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Book in advance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just like the Sagrada Fam\u00edlia, Casa Batll\u00f3 doesn\u2019t sell tickets at the box office without a guaranteed advance reservation\u2014you can try your luck on the spot, but during peak season (spring-summer), there\u2019s a real risk that tickets will be sold out for that same day. The two are constantly compared, and the question of whether to visit one or both is a common one:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Casa Batll\u00f3<\/strong> It has the most colorful and \u00abstory-driven\u00bb interior (the legend of the dragon is featured in every room), and it\u2019s usually the favorite among those looking for the most photogenic experience<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Casa Mil\u00e0<\/strong> It has a undulating limestone facade with hardly any straight lines, an attic with parabolic arches even more dramatic than Batll\u00f3\u2019s, and a rooftop with the famous \u201cwarrior\u201d chimneys\u2014more suited to those interested in structural architecture<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you're short on time or on a tight budget, Casa Batll\u00f3 is often recommended as the top choice because it's more visually striking for those who don't visit both. If you have half a day to spare, many companies offer a combined ticket for both, taking advantage of the fact that they're just a five-minute walk from each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How much time to devote to it<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Between 60 and 90 minutes with an audio guide, taking your time.
