Montju\u00efc is probably the most underrated area of Barcelona for first-time visitors\u2014it doesn't appear on \u00ab3 must-see\u00bb lists as often as the Sagrada Fam\u00edlia or Park G\u00fcell, but it's home to museums, gardens, a castle, and the most sweeping views of the entire city, all on the same hill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What exactly is Montju\u00efc?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is the hill that overlooks the southern part of Barcelona, next to the port. It was the main venue for the 1992 Olympic Games (the Olympic Stadium and many of the sports facilities are still there), but its history goes back much further: Montju\u00efc Castle, perched at the top, dates back to the 17th century and served as a military fortress for decades before becoming a public space. Today, the hill features green spaces, museums, botanical gardens, and lookout points, all connected by trails, a cable car, and a tourist bus line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What to See: Don't Try to Do Everything in One Visit<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Montju\u00efc has so much to offer that most visitors make the same mistake: trying to see everything in one afternoon and ending up exhausted without enjoying anything. It\u2019s better to choose based on what interests you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you're interested in art:<\/strong> The Museu Nacional d\u2019Art de Catalunya (MNAC), housed in the large domed building that dominates the view from Plaza Espa\u00f1a, has one of the finest collections of Romanesque art in the world. The Joan Mir\u00f3 Foundation, a little further up the mountain, is another must-see for anyone interested in art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you're looking for the best views:<\/strong> Montju\u00efc Castle, at the summit, offers 360\u00b0 views of the city and the sea\u2014probably the best panoramic viewpoint in Barcelona, even better than many of the better-known viewpoints in the city center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you're traveling with children or looking for a relaxing getaway:<\/strong> The Moss\u00e8n Costa i Llobera Gardens (which feature one of the best cactus collections in Europe) and the Botanical Garden are peaceful options, with far fewer people than the rest of the mountain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you're looking for something different to do at night:<\/strong> The Font M\u00e0gica (Magic Fountain) on Montju\u00efc, at the foot of the mountain across from the MNAC, puts on a water, light, and music show on weekend nights (and daily during peak season)\u2014it\u2019s free and very popular, so it\u2019s a good idea to arrive early to get a good spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to Get Around in the Mountains<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
