There are more than 1,700 works on display spread across three floors, and anyone who goes in thinking they’ll see everything will walk out two hours later without remembering a thing. This guide takes the opposite approach: choose wisely, go in without wasting the morning, and know when admission is free.

The two free hours—and the fine print

Admission to the museum is free the last two hours of each day: Monday through Saturday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and Sundays and holidays from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Applies to the permanent collection; temporary exhibitions are subject to 50%.

The detail nobody mentions is the line. Half the city gathers there, and it's normal to wait between thirty and forty-five minutes, so out of your two free hours, you're left with just over one. If you go this route, go on a weekday and get in line about thirty minutes before free admission begins. A Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. is nothing like a Saturday at 6:00 p.m.

There are also all-day open house events on May 18, October 12, and November 19, the museum's anniversary.

If you're going to pay

General admission costs €15, and reduced-price admission costs €7.50. Children under 18 and students between the ages of 18 and 25 are always admitted free of charge, at any time, upon presentation of documentation. The full hours of operation are Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Sundays and holidays from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. It is closed on January 1, May 1, and December 25.

Buying tickets online saves you from having to wait in line at the box office, which is a different line from the one to enter the venue. With the ticket already on your phone, you can enter through the Jerónimos Gate, the one on the side facing the cloister.

What to See If You Only Have Two Hours

A short route that works: Las Meninas by Velázquez, The Garden of Earthly Delights del Bosco, the Black Paintings by Goya with Saturn on the head, and May 2 and 3. Now you've seen what defines the museum. If you have some time to spare, The Gentleman with His Hand on His Chest El Greco and the Majas.

Here's a tip that's worth more than any list: grab the map at the entrance and mark five rooms. Five. You can check out the rest as you go, without feeling guilty.

When to Go

The early morning hours on weekdays are the quietest part of the day. Weekend afternoons are the worst. And once a month, there’s an option that few people take advantage of: the first Saturday The museum is open in the evening, from 8:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., with free admission and far fewer people than during the 6:00 p.m. time slot.

Planning the rest of your trip?
