Set out from downtown Barcelona on an air-conditioned bus to the foot of Montserrat! Once there, you’ll board the rack-and-pinion train and enjoy incredible views of the mountain’s unique topography. In fact, Montserrat means “serrated mountain,” and you’ll soon discover why. Your guide will lead you to the Abbey of Santa María de Montserrat, where they’ll explain the monastery’s history and architecture and reveal the legend of the miraculous apparition of the Virgin Mary in the Santa Cova cave. And of course, you can’t leave Montserrat without visiting the basilica and seeing La Moreneta, a wooden statue that likely dates back to the 12th century. Around the main area, there are also a large number of small churches to visit and trails you can explore.
